چکیده

Carving rock by indenting sharp objects into the surface under an impact force has been a favored method of fragmentation for millenia . However, as rock gets harder the lifetime of these sharp tools becomes short and, in a compromise hardened bits of rounder contour have become more common, particularly when driven by mechanical power. To better understand the behavior of these newer generation tools, and thus to ultimately enhance them and better predict their performance, a study is under way to define the penetration and failure mechanisms of polycrystalline diamond tools into a suite of hard, mainly igneous, rocks. The initial part of the study has shown that a relationship exists between the energy imparted through the tool and the amount of penetration achieved into the rock. The relationship is consistent in the same rock type, whether the energy is imparted dynamically or quasi-statically. The differences from rock type to rock type appear to be useful in quantifying the effect of rock type on cuttability. After testing, mechanisms of rock failure under the tool are then evaluated by considering the roles of overall confinement, development of the crushed zone, and the fracture system around the impact point. Based on this information the paper discusses the potential development of a standard of toughness for rock, and its role in quantifying machine performance.

Flexural Toppling Failure in Rock Slopes: From Theory to Applications

Toppling failure is one of the most common modes of failure of rock slopes in layered rock strata. Flexural toppling is one of the well-known modes of the failure. This type of failure occurs due to bending stress. In this article, a brief yet comprehensive review of toppling failure is presented. Firstly, the conditions and general mechanism of the failure are described. Then, experimental, th...

Numerical Modeling of Rock Slopes with a Potential of Block-Flexural Toppling Failure

One of the most important instabilities of rock slopes is toppling failure. Among the types of toppling failure, block-flexural failures are more common instability which occurs in nature. In this failure, some rock blocks break because of tensile stresses, and some overturn under their weights, and next to all of them topple together. Physical and theoretical modeling of this failure is studie...

Physical and theoretical modeling of rock slopes against block-flexure toppling failure

Block-flexure is the most common mode of toppling failure in natural and excavated rock slopes. In such failure, some rock blocks break due to tensile stresses and some overturn under their own weights and then all of them topple together. In this paper, first, a brief review of previous studies on toppling failures is presented. Then, the physical and mechanical properties of experimental mode...

Stability analysis of block-flexural toppling of rock blocks with round edges

One of the most conventional toppling instabilities is the block-flexural toppling failure that occurs in civil and mining engineering projects. In this kind of failure, some rock columns are broken due to tensile bending stresses, and the others are overturned due to their weights, and finally, all of the blocks topple together. A specific feature of spheroidal weathering is the rounding of th...

Evaluation of Effective Parameters on the Underground Tunnel Stability Using BEM

There are various parameters that affect stability and expansion of failure zones in under pressure tunnels. Among the important parameters that affect failure zones around the tunnels are cohesion and internal friction angle of the rock mass. In addition, the cross sectional shape is the considerable point in failure distribution around the tunnels. The stress analysis method is one of the app...
